From 12 november onwards, companies will have the option to trade physical palm kernel products as well as palm oil product. The trade in palm kernel oil and derivatives will follow the same rules as trade in palm oil products, except that initially companies will not be required to report palm kernel product transactions to the central UTZ Certified Traceability system.
While standard palm oil comes from crushed palm fruits, these fruits also enclose kernels, which contain oil as well. Palm kernel oil products have distinct applications.
Up until now, sustainable palm kernel oil could only be purchased through the Book & Claim certificate trading system. Since October 2008, certificates covering more than 140,000 tonnes of sustainably produced palm kernels have been purchased.
The full announcement by the RSPO stresses that companies that want to trade or process physical palm kernel products will have to make sure that their supply chain certification covers their organization's relevant procedures. Palm kernel product transactions will be monitored through supply chain certification audits.
