The RSPO Compensation Task Force (CTF) will be conducting a day and half workshop in Jakarta from the 3rd to the 4th February 2015.
The compensation procedures has been developed through a consultative process among members of the CTF, a sub-unit of the Biodiversity and High Conservation Value Working Group (BHCVWG), along with stakeholders. CTF members formulated the procedures with the aim to assist growers to attain full certification in all their operating units as well as to ensure social and environmental sustainability.
CTF has been tasked to develop and pilot test the proposed mechanism on HCV compensation which comes in two options, hectare for hectare to conserve biodiversity by the company or non-hectare basis by the company and/or by a third party for projects or programmes contributing to achieving conservation objectives.
The workshop, to be held at Akmani Hotel, will focus on the practical aspects of designing and implementing compensation projects and will be conducted by Forest Trends.
The objective of the workshop is to assist RSPO companies that are not in compliance with Criterion 7.3 of the RSPO Principles & Criteria (which states that new plantings since November 2005, should not have replaced primary forest or any area required to maintain or enhance one or more high conservation values) to determine ‘How and Where’ to deliver compensation that addresses their biodiversity liability.

- Interpreting the key principles required by the RSPO Compensation Guidance
- Options for designing and implementing projects that will achieve required compensation (restoration vs avoided deforestation)
- Typical approach and steps in the design of compensation projects, including assessing feasibility and selecting best options that take into account practical considerations such as likely conservation outcomes, legal status of land, capacity for implementation, additionality, types of activities planned, stakeholder views, etc.
- Implementation-related aspects of compensation projects such as project planning and management, monitoring, verification and auditing, preparing agreements with stakeholders, and drafting a management plan, associated budgets and financial arrangements.
The workshop which is open to all RSPO members is built on the successful workshop that was previously conducted in 2013 by Forest Trends for the CTF.
