Asosiasi Pekebun Swadaya Kelapa Sawit Labuhan Batu (APSKSL) is an association of independent oil palm smallholders in Rantau Prapat, North Sumatra, Indonesia. The association aims to create knowledge-based and social & environmentally friendly farmers to achieve national and international sustainability standards through provision of training and networking with local and national parties. At beginning, APSKSL has about 400 members of smallholders cultivating oil palm, in total, ca. 800 Ha.

Organisation's Commitments Toward Sustainability

  • How will your organisation promote the RSPO internally and to other stakeholders?
    APSKS Labuhanbatu is an association of farmers from local community. Its members have found the organisation and received sustainability knowledge in the past years from IPODS project. it is planed to extend its knowledge on RSPO to neighboring farmers in the community by giving training about RSPO standards to member, and the APSKSL provides socialization of its activities to stakeholders on a regular basis.
  • Where relevant, what processes is the organisation establishing to engage with interested parties, for example to resolve conflict or to use sustainably produced palm oil?
    APSKSL is a local organisation and it has a clear organisational structure with job description. Its member is committed to transparency and intended to engage with those like-minded parties in advancing community's sustainability. Moreover, the APSKSL has its SOP to avoid or minimize the risk of conflicts or dispute.
  • Where relevant, how will your organisation work towards implementing the RSPO Principles and Criteria or assessing supplier performance against these criteria?
    the APSKS is focusing ion 4 key components to implement RSPO P&C:
    1. Group management: the group manager leads a group of people to plan, manage and monitor the entire activity.
    2. Documentation and Data: the APSKSL is responsible for ensuring that all related documentation and data related to RSPO
    3. Training: APSKSL ensures that all members receive and practice basic knowledge for sustainability oil palm production
    4. Internal Audit unit, established a system to check and monitor its members practices that adhered to RSPO P&C
  • Any other information that would support the application such as what your organisation hopes to gain from joining RSPO and how it would support RSPO?
    The independent smallholders once never came to work together nor have received any formal training regarding palm oil and sustainability. Through the process of RSPO certification, APSKSL hopes to come together and access to knowledge to increase farm productivity, access to finance for a better investment to farming livelihood and to access to sustainability market through the certification of RSPO with international value chain.
