Organisation's Commitments Toward Sustainability

  • How will your organisation promote the RSPO internally and to other stakeholders?
Danone is committed to eliminating deforestation from its supply chain by 2020, and to the principles of no deforestation, no development on peat, and no exploitation of rights of workers, indigenous peoples and local communities (NDPE). We signed the New York Declaration on Forests and are a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) since 2014, the Palm Oil Innovation Group (POIG), the Southeast Asia Alliance for Sustainable Palm Oil (SASPO) and the North America Sustainable Palm Oil Network (NASPON). We also support the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) resolution to achieve zero net deforestation in key commodity sectors, including palm oil, by 2020. We highlight these partnerships in our Palm Oil policy, published in 2015 and updated in 2018.
In 2018, over 98% of the palm oil source sourced by Danone was RSPO certified
  • Where relevant, what processes is the organisation establishing to engage with interested parties, for example to resolve conflict or to use sustainably produced palm oil?
With the support of Earthworm (formerly The Forest Trust - TFT), Danone conducts a supply chain mapping every year, and reached traceability to mill, and in many cases plantation level, in 2018. Based on this map and discussions with various stakeholders, we are able to identify risks in our supply chain. If they are confirmed after an investigation with internal and external experts, we establish a dialogue with our suppliers to work towards remediation. This can include suspension of certain suppliers until they demonstrate concrete progress towards compliance.
  • Where relevant, how will your organisation work towards implementing the RSPO Principles and Criteria or assessing supplier performance against these criteria?
Our Palm Oil Policy is consistent with and supportive of new RSPO Principles and Criteria. All of our suppliers are required to respect our policy. To help ensure this is the case, we conduct a mapping exercise and establish action plans with our suppliers when a risk of noncompliance is confirmed.
  • Any other information that would support the application such as what your organisation hopes to gain from joining RSPO and how it would support RSPO?
Danone is committed to eliminating deforestation from its supply chain by end of 2020.
That said, we recognize the systemic challenges that remain prevalent in the palm oil industry and act to address these challenges (such as deforestation, worker rights...). To do so, we support CGF Sustainability working group to strengthen RSPO certification so that it is effective in protecting ecosystems and people. This is essential to protecting the critical role and reputation of RSPO. As a member of POIG, Danone supports the POIG recommendation on reviewing criteria. Furthermore, Danone supports RPSO efforts to reinforce its grievance process in case of non compliance.
In parallel, we actively contribute to the development of segregated RSPO Palm Oil in US and support the transition towards sustainable Palm Oil in the US market.
