Organisation's Commitments Toward Sustainability

  • How will your organisation promote the RSPO internally and to other stakeholders?
Building on our key strengths and experiences in global agricultural supply chain management, Olam will move upstream to invest in and establish oil palm plantations in Africa, beginning with 50,000 hectares in Phase 1 in Gabon. Olam intends to be 100% compliant with RSPO from the initial development of plantations, following the RSPO new planting procedure guidelines. This is in line with our broader Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability commitments across all our other businesses, which includes the supply of certified products under the Rainforest Alliance, Fairtrade and UTZ schemes among others. Olam issues an annual Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability report where commitment to RSPO will be demonstrated through reporting on progress and status of compliance. We will target markets that recognize and value sustainably produced palm oil to promote RSPO. We will engage other stakeholders, including local communities, government bodies and NGOs to bring about continuous improvements to sustainability standards in the industry.
  • Where relevant, what processes is the organisation establishing to engage with interested parties, for example to resolve conflict or to use sustainably produced palm oil?
Adhering to RSPO Principles and Criteria, Olam has engaged reputed and independent third party consultants to carry out EIA, HCV assessments and far-reaching stakeholder engagement to ensure external input to the process. We are committed to follow through on the findings and agreements reached as a result of this process.
  • Where relevant, how will your organisation work towards implementing the RSPO Principles and Criteria or assessing supplier performance against these criteria?
Where Olam is engaged in Greenfield development of plantations and mills, we are committed to set up these areas in full compliance with RSPO Principles and Criteria. Where Olam acquires an existing palm oil plantation or business we will conduct a gap analysis as a part of due diligence
  • Any other information that would support the application such as what your organisation hopes to gain from joining RSPO and how it would support RSPO?
Olam endeavours to establish the first RSPO compliant palm oil plantation in Africa where large scale plantations do not exist at this time. By achieving RSPO compliance for our own plantation, we will be constructively involved in building RSPO's visibility in Africa. Olam will work with external stakeholders and RSPO to develop standards for Africa where none exists at present.
