Shiseido Company Limited is a manufacturer and marketer of cosmetics. Shiseido commenced operations as Japan' s first Western-style pharmacy in Tokyo's Ginza district inl 872. Shiseido's corporate mission is "We seek to identify new, richer sources of value and use them to create a beautiful lifestyle." This policy has led to high-value products and services in the cosmetics and other businesses promoting people's beauty and well-being.

Shiseido has been actively expanding its business striving to become a "global player representing Asia with it's origins in Japan". Today, Shiseido operates in 73 countries (February 2010).

Shiseido will continue to discover new deep seated values and create new life culture filled with beauty through diverse activities centering on sales of cosmetics.

Organisation's Commitments Toward Sustainability

  • How will your organisation promote the RSPO internally and to other stakeholders?
    Internally, primary initiatives will be implemented to raise awareness and educate general employees of the importance of biodiversity conservation and seeking sustainable raw material procurement. Furthermore, we will start investigating the procurement of palm oil certified by the RSPO (CSPO).

    To other stakeholders, we will clearly communicate Shiseido's position on biodiversity. Within this scope we will announce our deep concerns regarding environmental and social issues surrounding conventional palm oil production methods, and our intentions to work towards finding sound solutions.
  • Where relevant, what processes is the organisation establishing to engage with interested parties, for example to resolve conflict or to use sustainably produced palm oil?
    In 1992, Shiseido adopted the ''Shiseido Eco Policy". Environmental conservation is a key priority at Shiseido; this set of guidelines detail how environmental considerations must weigh in all of our business activities Eco Policy

    In order to undertake efforts to preserve the global environment in all of Shiseido's business activities:
    (1)Consider the environment and use natural resources and energy with great care.
    (2)Promote the development and application of new technologies that do not place a burden on the environment.
    (3)Aim to raise the level of employee awareness toward environmental protection.
    (4)Endeavor to work closely with local communities and society.

    The first statement of the policy shows that Shiseido has continued to recognize the importance of biodiversity conservation, and using sustainable material sources. In this respect, we have been reviewing palm oil and the deepening concerns surrounding it. As a result, we have decided to pursue participation in the RSPO in agreement with the RSPO Principles and Criteria.
  • Where relevant, how will your organisation work towards implementing the RSPO Principles and Criteria or assessing supplier performance against these criteria?
    Shiseido will take the following actions to implement RSPO Principles and Criteria.70% of the usage of palm oil is for food items. Only about 10% of palm oil is used by cosmetics and toiletry manufacturers such as us. The volume of palm oil used by the entire Shiseido group is less than about 100 tons annually, with much use of derivatives. It is difficult to grasp the traceability of imported palm oil and derivatives as a whole.

    However, Shiseido is one of the top manufacturers of cosmetic products in the world, with a high level of recognition and trust especially in the countries in Asia. Therefore, Shiseido has a responsibility to switch over from palm oil to CSPO in compliance with the Principles and Criteria of RSPO. By taking this action, Shiseido can encourage suppliers to increase their supply of CSPO and inform consumers about issues relating to palm oil.
  • Any other information that would support the application such as what your organisation hopes to gain from joining RSPO and how it would support RSPO?
    Shiseido supports and contributes to rainforest activities in Indonesia, which are promoted by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) Japan. Our various collaborations with such NGOs enabled us to obtain extensive information regarding environmental conservation activities that led us to learn about the RSPO. By participating in the RSPO, we hope to be able to communicate and exchange information with many other companies and NGOs actively engaging in environmental preservation efforts. Shiseido presently conducts business in 73 countries worldwide. We hope that our participation in the RSPO will underscore the importance of sustainable palm oil to our stakeholders.
