Profile

Rhodes Food Group is a well established South African food producer of high quality canned foods, beverages and meal solutions across fresh, frozen and long-life formats. Rhodes Foods Group has eleven state-of-the-art production facilities and two farms - dairy and pineapple. The production facilities are equipped with modern technology and certified according to international standards (FSC 22000 & HACCP).

The following Fresh Food production facilities are seeking Multi-site RSPO certification according to the Mass Balance Supply Chain System: Pies and Pastry facility in Aeroton, Gauteng and Ready Meals facility in Aeroton. The Pies and Pastry operation produces fresh and frozen baked and unbaked pies, pasties, sausage rolls and pie-slices. They produce pies and pastries under private label for Woolworths and the Corner Bakery franchise chain. The operation also produces for its own two own brands, namely Magpie and Saint Pie. Currently all Palm products used (Pastrex Ultra and Planto from Sime Darby Hudson & Knight) are RSPO mass balance for selected clients. The Ready Meals Factories in Gauteng produces a range of ready to heat meals, fresh pasta, pork pies and quiches under private label for Woolworths as well as a limited range of products to Food Service clients.

(see link below on website for showing how this factory fits within RFG - http://www.rhodesfoodgroup.com/content/uploads/2015/04/RHODES-Structure.jpg).

Organisation's Commitments Toward Sustainability

  • How will your organisation promote the RSPO internally and to other stakeholders?
Internally - Information & Training sessions.

Other Stakeholders - Updating of Specifications and possible claims on social media.
  • Where relevant, what processes is the organisation establishing to engage with interested parties, for example to resolve conflict or to use sustainably produced palm oil?
RFG Pies and Pastries has set up a relationship with Sime Darby Hudson & Knight to supply us with Certified Mass Balance Palm Products (Pastrex Ultra & Planto). All of the before metioned products has been Mass Balance Certified since May 2015 for selected clients
  • Where relevant, how will your organisation work towards implementing the RSPO Principles and Criteria or assessing supplier performance against these criteria?
We are selecting reputable suppliers who are already RSPO certified for our Palm Oil products.
  • Any other information that would support the application such as what your organisation hopes to gain from joining RSPO and how it would support RSPO?
RFG is joining RSPO in order to have it production facility RSPO certified. Our customer currently does not require certification although all raw materials containing palm should be reponsible sourced. We would like to progress with the certification step to show our Groups commitment to sustainability and the environment. Should our customer want to make any claims in future this can only be done if we are certified. We like to be Pioneers and would therefore like to be the first Pie Manufacturer in South Africa to be RSPO certified.
