Fonterra is a leading multinational dairy company, co-operatively owned by 10,000 New Zealand supplier shareholders. Exporting 95 percent of its shareholders' production, Fonterra is the world's largest exporter of dairy products, responsible for half of international dairy trade across open borders.

Fonterra's global supply chain stretches from its shareholders' farms in New Zealand to customers and consumers in 140 countries. Collecting more than 16 billion litres of milk a year, Fonterra manufactures and markets over 1.9 million tonnes of product annually, making it the world's leader in large scale milk procurement, processing and management, with some of the world's best known dairy brands.

Fonterra has four business segments defined by product type and geographic area, reflecting how the business is managed. These are:

Fonterra Global Ingredients and Food Service: operations in North Asia, North America and Europe

ANZ: branded businesses marketing brands such as Anchor, Tip Top and Mainland

AsiaMEA: operations in Asia, Africa and Middle East

LATAM: operations in Chile and Brazil

    Organisation's Commitments Toward Sustainability

  • How will your organisation promote the RSPO internally and to other stakeholders?
    Fonterra has developed a sustainability policy and strategy which requires all business units to Procure goods and services in a sustainable way.
  • Where relevant, what processes is the organisation establishing to engage with interested parties, for example to resolve conflict or to use sustainably produced palm oil?
    Our Executive Committee has issued directives to the business re sourcing sustainable palm and derivatives.
  • Where relevant, how will your organisation work towards implementing the RSPO Principles and Criteria or assessing supplier performance against these criteria?
    Our suppliers are required to supply sustainable palm at the appropriate level and contract KPIs will reflect this.
  • Any other information that would support the application such as what your organisation hopes to gain from joining RSPO and how it would support RSPO?
    Fonterra wants to support the RSPO in its aims and sees this application as a step in its journey to becoming a leader in sustainable practices.
