Organisation's Commitments Toward Sustainability

  • How will your organisation promote the RSPO internally and to other stakeholders?
Costco Wholesale released its Palm Oil Policy in September 2015, which is posted and publicly available on our costco.com company website in the section, under the heading Corporate Sustainability and Animal Welfare.

Internally, Costco will meet with and provide awareness for each merchandising group that purchases our private label Kirkland Signature items containing palm oil, palm kernel oil or derivatives. We will work with our suppliers to understand and document their supply chain structures. Our goal is that all palm oil used in Kirkland Signature products will be 100% RSPO certified (or equivalent) by 2021 or sooner.
  • Where relevant, what processes is the organisation establishing to engage with interested parties, for example to resolve conflict or to use sustainably produced palm oil?
Costco is working with its Kirkland Signature suppliers to source palm oil based upon the following principles by 2021 or sooner: (1) compliance with RSPO principles (or equivalent); (2) protection of HCV and HCS forests; (3) no new development on peatlands and the use of Best Management Practices for existing plantations on peatlands; (4) Commitment to no-burn policies; (5) Commitment to traceable and transparent palm oil supply chains; (6) respect for human rights including the right to free, prior and informed consent, for community stakeholders impacted by expansion; (7) support for the integration of smallholders into sustainable supply chains; and (8) compliance with Costco's Supplier Code of Conduct and applicable international, national and local laws and regulations.
  • Where relevant, how will your organisation work towards implementing the RSPO Principles and Criteria or assessing supplier performance against these criteria?
Annually, Costco will (1) meet with its suppliers to discuss their progress and implementation of sustainability certified RSPO products, and (2) report our company's progress on our costco.com website.
  • Any other information that would support the application such as what your organisation hopes to gain from joining RSPO and how it would support RSPO?
Costco supports practices to help achieve zero net deforestation. Costco intends to engage with other RSPO members to address smallholder engagement into sustainable supply chains.
