    Organisation's Commitments Toward Sustainability

  • How will your organisation promote the RSPO internally and to other stakeholders?
In March 2015 Target publicly announced that all palm oil in Target?s owned brand food (Market Pantry, Archer Farms, Simply Balanced), personal care (up&up), and household cleaning products (up&up) will be fully traceable and sustainably sourced by 2018 or sooner. Target commits to continued progress along the spectrum of Book and Claim, Mass Balance, and Segregated suppliers, with specific multi-year targets and reporting, leading to full traceability in the supply chains of products covered by our commitment in 2018 or sooner.

Target is providing internal training to its team members about the importance of certified sustainable palm oil and provides regular communication to and direct engagement with our business partners that produce products for Target. Annual progress toward our goal will be reported in our Corporate Responsibility Report, released each spring, as well as directly to stakeholders as warranted.
  • Where relevant, what processes is the organisation establishing to engage with interested parties, for example to resolve conflict or to use sustainably produced palm oil?
Target will work actively with its vendors, suppliers, and other stakeholders to implement our policy, remove all unacceptable sources of palm oil, where required, and listen to feedback about our work. Feedback or questions can be directed to the Contact Us section of our website: https://corporate.target.com/corporate-responsibility/.
  • Where relevant, how will your organisation work towards implementing the RSPO Principles and Criteria or assessing supplier performance against these criteria?
A major first step in implementing Target?s commitment to sourcing sustainable palm oil is to understand the volumes of palm oil that are entering Target?s owned brands. In order to collect this baseline information, we are assessing the amount of palm oil, palm kernel oil, and palm oil derivatives used in 2014 in the production of products covered by our commitment. The assessment will enable us to (1) better understand the types of palm oil volumes entering our owned brand products, (2) map our supply chains back to mill, and (3) raise awareness among our supply chain partners. We have partnered with Proforest, a world-wide leader in sustainable agricultural and forest product supply chains, to further understand the environmental and social impacts associated with the use of palm oil in our owned brand products.
  • Any other information that would support the application such as what your organisation hopes to gain from joining RSPO and how it would support RSPO?
As a member of the RSPO, Target will support the adherence to and strengthening and improvement of standards by working with the RSPO, suppliers, other retailers, and manufacturers. It is a further demonstration of our support for and commitment to sustainable and traceable palm oil and greater awareness of the work of RSPO.
