Organisation's Commitments Toward Sustainability

  • How will your organisation promote the RSPO internally and to other stakeholders?
Wendy?s will release a public statement to be posted on About Wendys.com on Responsible Sourcing of Palm Oil and our commitment to membership in RSPO.

Internal cross functional teams and most external suppliers will be aware of our position and end goal of using only sustainable palm oil for cooking oil in international markets and in U.S. & Canada where it is an ingredient. Where that cannot be achieved, we plan to purchase GreenPalm certificates.
  • Where relevant, what processes is the organisation establishing to engage with interested parties, for example to resolve conflict or to use sustainably produced palm oil?
Wendy?s has surveyed our suppliers to assess Palm Oil use and status in North American (North America in this case refers to the U.S. and Canada) restaurants, which make up 95% of our system. In these restaurants, Palm oil is not used for cooking but is used as an ingredient in a relatively small number of non-core items. We are tracking supplier responses to our request for data on their sourcing practices.

For North American products, we will have ongoing dialogue with suppliers to understand what opportunities exist to source RSPO-certified sustainable palm and will continue to work with RSPO and GreenPalm to use the book-and-claim program as warranted.

We are working with our international team to assess palm oil used for and will continue our sustainable planning as we learn more about usage in these markets.
  • Where relevant, how will your organisation work towards implementing the RSPO Principles and Criteria or assessing supplier performance against these criteria?
Wendy?s has established an internal team and process for working with our suppliers to continually inventory the palm oil in our North America supply chain and gather reliable, consistent data about its sustainability status.

We will request regular updates from our suppliers and communicate to our suppliers our interest in responsibly sourcing palm oil.

By 2017, Wendy?s will have a plan in place to achieve a goal that 100% of the palm oil used in our North American supply chain ? where nearly 95 % of all Wendy?s restaurants are located ? supports the production of sustainable palm oil. Our goal is to have this ingredient be RSPO-certified sustainable, but where that cannot be immediately achieved, we would continue to purchase GreenPalm certificates under the RSPO?s Book and Claim supply chain option.
  • Any other information that would support the application such as what your organisation hopes to gain from joining RSPO and how it would support RSPO?
Wendy?s continually strives to be a responsible steward and promotes sustainable practices in our business and our supply chain. While we do not currently use palm oil in core products in North America, we recognize the importance of this issue.
