ABN AMRO Bank is a Dutch state-owned bank that serves retail, private and commercial banking customers in the Netherlands and across the globe. As a leading retail and commercial bank, we have a strong base in the Netherlands and follow our customers abroad. We are active internationally in areas in which we have substantial expertise, such as Energy, Commodities & Transportation. When it comes to sustainability, we aim to be a leading bank in this area within a few years. With this in mind, we consciously embed sustainability in the bank's strategy and operations. In fact, one of our Business Principles is: I behave sustainably. We take it upon ourselves to continually improve our sustainable behaviour, both in building lasting customer relationships and in our own business operations. Wherever possible, we use our financial expertise for the benefit of society. We provide finance in a sustainable and responsible way and we use our leverage to create positive impact.

Organisation's Commitments Toward Sustainability

  • How will your organisation promote the RSPO internally and to other stakeholders?
ABN AMRO has a comprehensive Sustainability Risk Framework in place that includes an Agri-Commodities Policy and is fully integrated into our credit approval process and the client acceptance procedures. As a part of the Agri-Commodities Policy, our Palm Oil Policy integrates the RSPO Principles and Criteria as the reference for our engagements in the palm oil sector.
  • Where relevant, what processes is the organisation establishing to engage with interested parties, for example to resolve conflict or to use sustainably produced palm oil?
Engagement with our stakeholders is a part of ABN AMRO’s culture and sustainability strategy. To assist the front office in this engagement process, we have, next to our Central Sustainability Department, a dedicated team of sustainability practitioners within the businesses.
  • Where relevant, how will your organisation work towards implementing the RSPO Principles and Criteria or assessing supplier performance against these criteria?
Implementing our Palm Oil Policy means that we assess the sustainability performance of our clients in the palm oil sector against the RSPO Principles and Criteria. We plan to review and fine-tune this Policy in the course of 2014.
