    Organisation's Commitments Toward Sustainability

  • How will your organisation promote the RSPO internally and to other stakeholders?
Safeway will release a palm oil policy at the end of 2013. This policy will be publicly available on our CSR website and it will convey our intentions surrounding responsibly produced palm oil. We intend to phase-in RSPO certified palm oil into our supply chain through the sourcing of mass-balance oil, while phasing-out conventional, un-certified or irresponsibly produced oil.
  • Where relevant, what processes is the organisation establishing to engage with interested parties, for example to resolve conflict or to use sustainably produced palm oil?
Our goal is to transition our palm oil supply to a responsibly produced one. Safeway supports the transition to sustainably sourced palm oil, which avoids human trafficking, child labor, greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss or any other poor environmental management practices in order to do business.
  • Where relevant, how will your organisation work towards implementing the RSPO Principles and Criteria or assessing supplier performance against these criteria?
We plan to begin purchasing RSPO/mass-balance palm oil while phasing-out palm oil that is considered irresponsibly produced according to our company criteria and RSPO criteria.

Additionally, we plan to work collaboratively with other retailers, NGOs, manufacturers and suppliers to conduct audits and meet our criteria for responsibly produced palm oil.
  • Any other information that would support the application such as what your organisation hopes to gain from joining RSPO and how it would support RSPO?
Joining the RSPO is just the first step on a long journey towards sustainable and responsible palm oil. Through the RSPO, we aim to foster relationships and build trust and collaboration among others in various industries who face similar challenges with palm oil as we do.

We hope to see the RSPO strengthened in terms of its criteria and enforcement, and believe the best way to meet our goals is to work collaboratively in constructive and positive ways that can help drive progress and improvement.
