Wild Asia Sdn. Bhd. (Wild Asia Group Scheme)

Wild Asia (WA) is legally chartered as a Malaysian company (Reg. No: 634446-W) and operates as a ?social enterprise?, a concept for a business with social or environmental missions and not for maximising shareholder returns. In simple terms, we are essentially a ?not-for-profit? and earn our income largely through the consultancies, training and other services we provide.

In a move to support small farmers in palm oil, the company created Wild Asia Group Scheme (WAGS). The aim is to address the challenges faced by independent small farmers by helping them improve their farming practices and supporting them towards compliance with international standards (for example, RSPO). WAGS is a community development initiative that would provide the working model for independent small farmers to ultimately improve their livelihoods by improving yields, having lower environment or social risks and ensuring access to the international market of sustainable palm oil.

WAGS works with supply chain partners, international donors and national organisations to create local support teams to help establish and certify small farmers within distinct producer groups.

Established in 2012, the group scheme is now operational in Malaysia (Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah) and currently covers 278 farmers producing an estimated 3,089 tonnes of CPO. WAGS is actively seeking new partners to establish pilot projects in other palm producing countries and to work with existing RSPO-certified mills to extend their certification scope to small farmers.

ACOP Report Submissions

Organisation's Commitments Toward Sustainability

  • How will your organisation promote the RSPO internally and to other stakeholders?
WA actively promotes RSPO through its technical work and training programmes. WA runs specific training topics which covers the RSPO Certification System (Principles & Criteria for Producers and Supply Chains) and also key social and environmental topics (e.g. HCV, Biodiversity in Plantations, FPIC, SIA). WAGS itself is a special management system designed to extend these programmes to independent small farmers.
  • Where relevant, what processes is the organisation establishing to engage with interested parties, for example to resolve conflict or to use sustainably produced palm oil?
WA provides a number of solutions for promoting the growth of sustainable palm oil. Apart from training resources, we provide technical support to producers, mills and small farmers to meet the RSPO standards. We also offer a risk assessment tool for supply chain actors keen to risk assess their supply base or to identify strategic areas for intervention.
  • Where relevant, how will your organisation work towards implementing the RSPO Principles and Criteria or assessing supplier performance against these criteria?
WAGS is a management support system and works to identify, support and coach small farmers to meet the standards of RSPO.
  • Any other information that would support the application such as what your organisation hopes to gain from joining RSPO and how it would support RSPO?
WA has been an active member in supporting the values of RSPO for a number of years. WA's key personnel participate in a number of RSPO Working Groups. WAGS is a specifically designed solution to improve standards of small farmers.
