John Laidlow

John Laidlow is responsible for HSBC’s strategy and policies for managing the negative impacts which HSBC’s finance could indirectly have on people or on the environment. HSBC was one of the founding members of RSPO and requires its palm oil customers to be members of, and certified under, RSPO. Beyond palm oil, John is responsible for HSBC’s approach to other sensitive sectors, such as forestry, mining, project finance and weapons.  He develops strategies to support customers with a positive impact on sustainable development, eg financing renewable energy or introducing discounted finance for Certified Sustainable Palm Oil.
John joined HSBC in 1984 and has worked in a wide variety of roles, including retail branch manager, relationship manager for business customers and credit risk manager. He has worked in the sustainability area since 2006.
