Summary of Results & Recommendations

The 4th Roundtable Meeting on Sustainable Palm Oil (or RT4) was held in Singapore on 21-22 November 2006. With a total participation list numbering 388 individuals from over 28 countries. Compared to RT3 in 2005 with over 320 participants, the increasing number of participants reflects the growing stature and importance of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). Introduction

Since its formation in April 2004, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) has grown steadily in size, complexity and accomplishments. At the 3rd Roundtable Meeting (RT3) on Sustainable Palm Oil, and 2nd General Assembly (GA2) of members held in November last year, the Principles & Criteria for Sustainable Palm Oil Production (P&C) were adopted by RSPO. Programmes were initiated to provide a framework for verification of the P&C, to develop a Code of Conduct for all members and a Smallholder Task Force and several other activities were launched. With the acceptance of the 100th Ordinary Member on 22 May 2006, and total membership at roughly 140 members, RSPO has grown into a significant association.

With increased profile comes increased expectation and pressure to act. The future direction of RSPO is at a crossroads as it moves from the definition -of “sustainable palm oil” to defining its uptake and use in the market. RT4 provides the key event for RSPO, and interested stakeholders to discuss and exchange experiences related to implementation of the P&C, verification and supply-chain aspects. Furthermore the new Code of Conduct for members will be elaborated.

RSPO is delighted to announce RT4 to which all stakeholders are invited to this coming 21 & 22 November 2006 in Singapore.

Highlights of RT4

Testing and implementation of the Principles & Criteria for Sustainable Palm Oil Production (P&C)

Since the official endorsement of the P&Cs in November 2005, RSPO has been undergoing a 2-year trial implementation period. Subsequently various activities have been initiated: pilot projects by companies, National Interpretation of the P&Cs in various producer countries, as well as efforts to tackle the applicability of P&Cs for smallholders by the Smallholder Task Force. RT4 will provide a forum to exchange preliminary results, share information and to review progress.

Presentation and discussion of models for verification

The Verification Working Group is currently developing a framework for the verification of the P&Cs. Concurrently a working group is evaluating and testing various supply chain models. RT4 provides an opportunity for stakeholders to express preferred options for verification and distribution of ‘sustainable palm oil’, based on the outcomes of these projects.

What happens in the supply chain?

RT3 featured breakout groups in which different member categories of RSPO, i.e. processors, consumer good manufacturers, retailers, banks, environmental NGOs and social NGOs, looked at the question: what is expected of us, in the context of sustainable palm oil. Invited speakers will address this question from those different perspectives.

From Words to Actions: Meeting Expectations of RSPO Members’ & Stakeholders

As RSPO moves closer to meet its objectives, a shift in emphasis, exposure and expectations will influence activities and communications with stakeholders. In order for RSPO to remain relevant and credible globally RSPO would have to take stock of its position now, through dialogue and engagement. As an inclusive and action oriented organisation, such views would prove invaluable in continuing the momentum built up since RT1.

3rd RSPO General Assembly (GA3) for members only

RSPO Members will convene for the 3rd Annual RSPO General Assembly (GA3) where the endorsement of the Members’ Code of Conduct as well as the election of a new Executive Board will occur.

Who should attend?

Stakeholders and representatives along the palm oil supply chain, including oil palm growers, palm oil processors and/or traders, consumer goods manufacturers, retailers, banks and investors, environmental NGOs and social/developmental NGOs, research and development organizations, government agencies and international organizations.

Call for exhibitions

We would like to invite organisations that have been involved with or interested in sustainable palm oil production and use, to share their experiences through exhibitions that will form an integral part of RT4. Owing to the success of exhibitions at the previous Roundtable meetings, we believe that the exhibitions provide an added avenue for stakeholders to share ideas, experiences, lessons learnt and to provoke thought in a more intimate and personal setting – something that would add to the constructive and open debate as we progress towards implementing and verifying the Principles & Criteria for Sustainable Palm Oil Production (P&C) at RT4.

RT4 exhibitions application deadline: 15 September 2006.

Call for poster presentations

We would like to invite organizations involved in the testing and implementation of the Principles & Criteria for Sustainable Palm Oil Production (P&C), to share their experiences through poster presentations during RT4’s Wall gallery Walk Session.

RT4's Wall Gallery Walk Session will provide test case delegates with an opportunity to explain their cases and outcomes (from testing the P&C) via poster presentations: What are the elements you are testing in the P&C? What is good about it, what is bad?

RT4 poster presentations application deadline: 22 September 2006.
