The National Federation of Oil Palm Growers of Colombia (FEDEPALMA) was established in 1962 as a business and trade organization for the oil palm agroindustry in Colombia to defend the interests of the oil palm growers, orient them in designing technological and business policies to keep them informed with the latest trends and developments in the global market for oilseeds, oils and fats.

FEDEPALMA plays a key role in ensuring the adequate supply of oils and fats in the domestic market and in generating export surplus recognized internationally for their high quality. It has designed the parafiscal funds for the oil palm agroindustry and manages these funds, which were established to finance the research and development of the Colombian oil palm sector and to stabilize the domestic vis-à-vis international prices.

FEDEPALMA has also created the Center for Oil Palm Research in Colombia (CENIPALMA) to meet the needs of the oil palm sector in the area of research and technology transfer; the International Trader (CI Acepalma SA) to promote and to facilitate the commercialization of palm oil in the international markets; and PROPALMA SA, to generate investments in large scale productive projects on oil palm. All of these demonstrate the institutional strength of the Colombian oil palm sector, whose primary objective is to promote the development of an efficient, productive, sustainable and internationally competitive oil palm agroindustry and through this contribute significantly to the growth and development of the national economy.

Oxfam’s purpose: Oxfam works with others to overcome poverty and suffering.

Oxfam's Beliefs :

  • The lives of all human beings are of equal value.

  • In a world rich in resources, poverty is an injustice which must be overcome.

  • Poverty makes people more vulnerable to conflict and natural calamity; much of this suffering can be prevented, and must be relieved.

  • People's vulnerability to poverty and suffering is increased by unequal power relations based on, for example, gender, race, class, caste and disability; women, who make up a majority of the world's poor, are especially disadvantaged.

  • Working together we can build a just and safer world, in which people take control over their own lives and enjoy their basic rights.

  • To overcome poverty and suffering involves changing unjust policies and practices, nationally and internationally, as well as working closely with people in poverty.

Oxfam's Identity:

  • Oxfam works internationally as part of a world-wide movement to build a just and safer world.

  • Oxfam is an independent British organisation, registered as a charity, affiliated to Oxfam International, with partners, volunteers, supporters, and staff of many nationalities.

  • Oxfam is accountable both to those who support it and to those whom it seeks to benefit by its
    efforts.

Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad (KLK) is a Malaysian multinational company involved in plantation, manufacturing, retailing and property development. Whilst plantation remains KLK's core business, the Group has expanded downstream into resource-based manufacturing, in particular oleochemicals, cocoa processing and rubber processing.

Through Crabtree & Evelyn, a worldwide brand, the Group is involved in the manufacture and retail of personal care products, toiletries, home fragrances and fine foods. Capitalising on the strategic location of its land bank in Malaysia, KLK has also ventured into property development. KLK is amongst the top plantation companies in Malaysia, with a land bank in excess of 360,000 acres, located in Peninsular Malaysia (160,000 acres), Sabah (100,000 acres) and Indonesia (100,000 acres). Oil palm is the predominant crop with an annual production of 1.9 million tonnes of Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB) and which is expected to increase rapidly in the years ahead as the vast new plantings in Sabah and Indonesia are progressively brought into harvesting. Processing of the crop is carried out in KLK's own mills and refineries into crude palm oil, RBD palm olein and stearin, and kernel oil and cake. The declining rubber area in Peninsular Malaysia, in favour of oil palm, has been made up to an extent by the new rubber area from KLK's plantations in Indonesia. This will enable KLK to maintain a steady yearly production of about 25,000 tonnes of premium SIR/SMR grades and latex concentrate, meeting with the ISO 9002 standards.

The Federal Land Development Agency (Felda) was established in July, 1956 under the Land Development Ordinance (1956) under the Ministry of Land and Co-operative Development. It is the largest producer of palm oil in Malaysia, accounting for 18.7% of the planted area and 20.6% of the total crude palm oil production in year 2001 in Malaysia.

Felda has the social-economic mandate of developing forest land for the resettlement the rural and landless poor. Felda’s original function was to channel financial assistance to State governments for land development programmes but this was changed in 1961 when it was given the responsibility for new land development and settlements for the whole country. Since the mid-eighties, Felda has focused on development of plantations on a commercial basis.

The objectives of Felda, as given in the 2000 Annual Report are:

  • To successfully manage established and developed agriculture areas through effective field management practices to increase settlers’ incomes by maximizing yields and minimizing production costs.

  • To contribute towards improving the settlers’ well-being by ensuring that they achieve a higher standard of living in a well organised and conducive manner.

  • To establish a dedicated and efficient management team capable of implementing all the activities as planned.

Sawit Watch was set up in 1998 and since then, we have built a network of over 50 members and local contacts working with dozens of local communities in Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi. Our mandate is based on the call to support local communities who have lost their forests and livelihoods because of large-scale oil palm expansion and for those in forestlands who continue to resist this development. Through this mandate we hope to contribute to the conservation and restoration of Indonesia’s forests and to promote the best deal for those communities that choose to live with oil palm plantations.

Sawit Watch focuses on raising community awareness. This involves capacity building in the form of meetings and training aimed to inform community members about the impacts of oil palm plantations. The second step is to assist communities in securing their land rights and sustaining traditional community (adat) laws. This is done through conflict resolution and lobbying government at the national and local level for land reform and community sovereignty over natural resource management. The third step is to assist communities in developing or maintaining economically, socially and ecologically sustainable land/forest management.
