Please state how your organisation intends to comply with the RSPO Code of Conduct. Specifically in the following areas:
How will your organisation promote the RSPO internally and to other stakeholders? :
Cargill is committed to sustainable palm oil production and its use. We have policies in place for responsible palm production on our own plantations. Our management team is continuously working closely with the palm related business units on building the palm sustainability strategy and setting the target commitments. We continue to communicate our efforts on sustainability and the role/activities of the RSPO to all our internal stakeholders. We are developing a palm sustainability training module to build up knowledge capacity on RSPO, growers and supply chain certification, trade and traceability which all employees can have access. Cargill continues to support and promote the RSPO agenda in our communication with our external stakeholders. We have organized workshops to raise awareness of the RSPO and the need for sustainable palm oil production among our suppliers. We discuss the RSPO activities and our sustainability efforts during meetings with suppliers, customers and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) on a regular basis. We encourage our third party suppliers to join the RSPO and attain certification.
Where relevant, what processes is the organisation establishing to engage with interested parties, for example to resolve conflict or to use sustainably produced palm oil? :
Cargill continues to engage and work with our stakeholders to support the RSPO efforts. We continue to expand our partnerships with NGOs and local communities in the vicinity of our plantations to protect HCVF, biodiversity, including orangutans in Kalimantan and tigers in Sumatra, and the land rights of local populations that could be affected by oil palm. We continue to discuss issues with relevant stakeholders to settle allegations and support the RSPO grievance procedure. We also work closely with food manufacturers to promote the use of sustainable palm oil .
Where relevant, how will your organisation work towards implementing the RSPO Principles and Criteria or assessing supplier performance against these criteria? :
We have made significant progress on implementing the RSPO in our business operations. We have received RSPO certification for our PT Hindoli palm plantation and smallholders at this plantation became the first to be certified under the RSPO’s Smallholder Principles and Criteria. We are currently working to certify our Harapan Sawit Lestari plantation in Kalimantan. Our European, Malaysian and Australian refineries have received RSPO supply chain certification for the segregation and mass balance supply chain model, while our refineries in the USA are working towards RSPO certification by mid-2011. We are collaborating with the World Wildlife Fund-U.S. (WWF) to assess our palm oil suppliers in Indonesia as part of our continued commitment to sustainable palm oil production. The assessment will help gauge current progress amongst Cargill’s suppliers to implement the principles and criteria established by the RSPO.
Any other information that would support the application such as what your organisation hopes to gain from joining RSPO and how it would support RSPO? :
Cargill fully supports the RSPO and its process to promote the growth and use of sustainable palm oil throughout the supply chain. We are ready to offer certified sustainable palm oil to our customers and at the same time pursue and ensure certification of our relevant business units are on schedule. We will continue to be active in our contribution towards RSPO efforts including increasing the awareness about RSPO among our stakeholders and enlist new members; active participation in Working Groups such as Communications and Claims/Trade and Traceability, Smallholders and Greenhouse Gas .
