Organisation's Commitments Toward Sustainability
How will your organisation promote the RSPO internally and to other stakeholders?
BASF will support the use of certified sustainable sources for palm and palm kernel oil. Our goal is to purchase all our palm and palm kernel oil from certified sustainable sources and we are working toward achieving this goal by 2015. Detailed information on BASF Sustainability approach are also part of our integrated Annual Report and are additionally available on the corporate website.
Where relevant, what processes is the organisation establishing to engage with interested parties, for example to resolve conflict or to use sustainably produced palm oil?
BASF also continuously presents the principles of sustainable palm oil when dealing with local industry associations, NGOs or other stakeholders. The goal is to capitalize on the institutional framework of the RSPO to effect change. Through its relationships with all relevant stakeholders BASF will continuously support sustainability improvements in the palm supply chain. BASF therefore actively participates in certification schemes such as the RSPO and supports producers in becoming more sustainable.
Where relevant, how will your organisation work towards implementing the RSPO Principles and Criteria or assessing supplier performance against these criteria?
BASF will continue to partner with palm oil suppliers and our customers to implement the use of certified palm oil and products through the entire value chain. In 2010 we have also joined the technical working group on derivatives, aiming for cross-industry standard values for the certificate coverage of palm based oleochemical-derivatives.
Any other information that would support the application such as what your organisation hopes to gain from joining RSPO and how it would support RSPO?
Since 2004 the former Cognis organization , now BASF Personal Care & Nutrition GmbH, has been an active member of RSPO.
With the integration of Cognis, which BASF has purchased in 2009, BASF has expertise in both – petrochemical-based and renewable-based chemistry. As a consumer of palm kernel oil, BASF actively promotes the objectives of the and is continuing Cognis’ RSPO membership. BASF has a highly professional management system and high standards concerning quality, safety and responsible sourcing of products in place to ensure the excellence our stakeholders strive for. Both petrochemical and renewable-based products have to fulfill basic sustainability criteria.
