Dr Gan has been involved with the RSPO since its inception in 2004 through active participation in working groups. He has over 36 years of experience within the palm oil sector. He began as a Planter, thereafter to Head of Research and Development; Business Development and eventually progressed to leading the sustainability aspects. His previous capacities include: Sime Darby Plantations and Kuala Lumpur Kepong.

SIMON SIBURAT

Simon Siburat started his planting career in 1989 with Sarawak Oil Palms Sdn Bhd that was formerly managed by Commonwealth Development Corporation as a cadet planter. Then in 1992 he joined Sapi Plantations Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of PPB Oil Palms Bhd. and was involved in the field operations before switching his career to research and advisory line in mid- 1995. The advisory unit, Eco-Management Unit (EMU) is providing agricultural services in the form of agronomy and IPM Advisory, Crop quality monitoring and GIS mapping. Eversince the merger with Wilmar International Limited, in 2007 he has taken a new role as the Sustainability co-ordinator for Wilmar International Limited in spear heading the implementation of RSPO and other sustainability issues in particular community and environmental issues. Ever since 2010, he served as Group Sustainability Controller for Wilmar Group.

HUGO BYRNES

Hugo Byrnes is responsible for Ahold’s sustainable trade and food and non-food policies, including Ahold’s food safety policies. Hugo Byrnes has held several positions, among others for Heineken, Procter & Gamble and the Global Food safety Initiative. Hugo Byrnes has a Dutch Law degree from the State University Leiden, the Netherlands. He is a food lawyer whose career has focussed on the food business and in particular on quality management and standardisation.

MARTIN CRAVEN

A graduate of Cambridge University in Classics, and qualified Chartered Accountant. Senior Manager positions held with international accountancy firm KPMG in the UK and Hong Kong. Joined audit client AAK (then called Anglia Oils) in 1990 as Finance Director; responsible over the last 20 years for Finance, Commodity Trading and Commercial activities, before becoming Managing Director of all UK operations in 2008. AAK is a full profile supplier of oils and fats to the food manufacturing, foodservice, retail and personal care industries in the UK and over 30 export markets from our UK sites. AAK is the largest importer and processor of palm oil in the UK, founder member of the RSPO and current Treasurer. Martin is currently Chairman of the UK Oils & Fats Industry Organisation, SCOPA (Seed Crushers and Oil Processors Association) and immediate past President of the National Edible Oil Distributors Association (NEODA).

TOO HENG LIEW

Too Heng Liew is responsible for the day to day management of the sustainability aspects of the group mills & estates. He assists actively in formulating and updating of new sustainability policies and guidelines. He graduated with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science from a local university and is an associate member of Incorporated Society of Planters. Prior to the present position, he has 31 years of solid estate management and undertakes some plantation advisory consultancy works.

THOMAS URSEM

Thomas Ursem joined Rabobank in 2008 as head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Rabobank International. He and his team are responsible for strategy and objective setting within Rabobank International and for the translation of Rabobank Group policy into daily business. With a clear focus on the Food & Agribusiness Rabobank International wants to contribute to the transformation needed to feed the world in a sustainable way. Rabobank is active in several roundtable initiatives for commodities such as the RSPO and wants and aims to support clients in their efforts to make supply chains more sustainable. Working with a team of sustainability experts Thomas is responsible for the coordination of the CSR activities worldwide and realizing this ambition. Prior to Rabobank, Thomas worked as a sustainability advisor at Deloitte & Touche and KPMG Sustainability.

KATE GEARY

Kate Geary is the policy adviser on climate change and the private sector. Kate's work focuses on encouraging business to be part of the solution to climate change, both in changing corporate practices and harnessing private sector lobbying in support of ambitious government policy. She has worked to develop Oxfam's policy on REDD and is carrying out research into carbon markets and their potential to support or hinder poor people's access to natural resources. Since graduating from Oxford University in 1990, Kate has worked for a variety of social justice, environmental and human rights organisations, including the Foundation for Ecological Recovery in Thailand and Cambodia.

Agnes Pondaven is project leader for sustainable palm oil in Indonesia for Carrefour group. Agnes joined Carrefour in 2003. She held several positions on food business from Quality, Marketing to Sustainability, and since then, been focused on agricultural world relationship and the concept of maintaining highest quality to customers from farm to table. She holds a Master's degree in Agro-development from Institut polytechnique Saint Louis in Cergy-Pontoise (ISTOM Engineer), specializing in implementing and managing agro-economic development projects in developing countries.

MICHAL ZRUST
Biodiversity and Palm Oil Project Manager for the Zoological Society of London |
|
Michal Zrůst, has held the post of Biodiversity and Palm Oil Project Manager for the Zoological Society of London since 2011. Originally from the Czech Republic, he graduated from the University of Reading with a BA in Economics and History and MSc in Wildlife Management and Conservation. Since 2006, he has worked in numerous countries including South Africa, India, Indonesia, Paraguay and Peru researching a wide variety of taxa and managing wildlife research projects. Michal returned to Indonesia in 2011, as Deputy Expedition Leader for the Barito River Initiative for Nature Conservation and Communities (BRINCC), a remote jungle expedition to the highlands of Indonesian Borneo undertaking biodiversity and participatory social studies. His involvement in the work of BRINCC is still ongoing.

JONATHAN HORRELL

|
Jonathan Horrell is Director Sustainability, Global Issues Management, for Kraft Foods. He is responsible for building relationships with policy makers and external stakeholders to support the company’s strategic sustainability programmes, and for managing key sustainability issues. His responsibilities cover all elements of sustainability from agricultural sourcing to post-consumer waste, working alongside specialists from functions across the business.
He joined Kraft Foods in 2003. Until December 2011 - a period which included the acquisition of Cadbury – he was Corporate Affairs Director for the UK and Ireland, with responsibility for external and internal communications, public affairs and community involvement. During that time, he managed communications programmes supporting Kenco's introduction of coffees from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms to the UK and Ireland.
Jonathan previously worked in the UK dairy industry and a journalist on a variety of IT and finance titles.

FELIPE GUERRERO

|
Felipe Guerrero has been DAABON’s Corporate Director of Sustainability since 2008; an almost century old family owned business based in Santa Marta, Colombia. Along with his team of professionals, Felipe plans, executes and monitors the environmental performance of 14 vertically integrated companies that range from sustainable organic agriculture (bananas, coffee, cocoa, palm oil and cattle grazing) to sea port development and mining.
Felipe is an Environmental Engineer from Universidad El Bosque in Bogota. He also holds an Associate’s Degree in Energy Resource Management from the University of Oklahoma and a Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering and Water Resource Management from Florida International University. His undergraduate and graduate thesis work has been published in peer reviewed scientific journals.

John Clendon

|
John Clendon is a New Zealander who has spent most of his career working in overseas plantation businesses.
John’s first overseas appointment was in 1976 as an agricultural advisor in the New Zealand Government’s overseas aid programme. In 1980 he joined the Unilever Plantations and Plant Science Group and for the next 18 years was employed in various management positions in Solomon Islands, Sabah, Thailand and finally in Johor where he was Unilever’s Director of oil palm operations in East Asia, Chairman of Unipamol Malaysia Sdn Bhd, and Director of Unifield PCL in the UK.
In 1998, John Clendon left Unilever to take up a position in the former Unilever oil palm business in Thailand where he remains to this day as Managing Director of Univanich Palm Oil Public Co. Ltd, based in Krabi, Southern Thailand. The Univanich business is Thailand’s leading producer with annual production of 170,000 tonnes crude palm oils, mostly derived from small outgrower farmers. In 2012, the Univanich–Plaipraya Enterprise Group became the first group of independent smallholders to achieve certification from RSPO as sustainable producers.
Univanich also operates an advanced oil palm breeding programme based on an extensive collection of pedigree material originally imported into Thailand under the Unilever research programme. Drought tolerant Univanich hybrid seeds are now exported to oil palm growers in more than fifteen countries. The company has also pioneered methane capture as a way to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from palm oil mills. The company’s three CDM registered methane capture projects supply electricity to Thailand’s national grid and generate approximately 90,000 CERs annually.

Alexandra Booth

|
Alexandra Booth is a member of the Palm Business Team at Olam International Ltd., the agri-commodity leader specialising in emerging markets and niche commodities. Alexandra built the sustainability and stakeholder engagement framework for Olam's Palm plantation ventures, and has developed valuable insight on the implementation of the RSPO standard during the development of new plantations in Africa. Based in Singapore, Alexandra travels frequently to Africa where she works with Olam’s Palm teams as they develop their respective plantation and mid-stream processing projects. She also works closely with other business units within Olam to understand responsible business practices in other agricultural products and guide upstream investments on the due diligence process when no comprehensive voluntary standards exist. Alex obtained an MA (hons.) in Arabic & International Relations from the University of St Andrews.
